The Story and the Engine – from writer Inua Ellams – saw the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) encounter a mysterious Barber (Ariyon Bakare) who uses the magic of stories to power the engine of his craft, which is concealed within a seemingly innocuous barber shop. As the story reaches its climax, the Doctor and companion Belinda (Varada Sethu) make their way to the heart of the Barber's craft – his story engine – and the Time Lord establishes a cognitive link with the apparatus.

The Story and the Engine saw the Doctor retreat to Lagos, Nigeria and specifically Omo’s Palace, a barber shop where the Time Lord without a home can feel accepted. Something sinister is afoot at Omo's however, with the powerful Barber (Ariyon Bakare) having seized control of the establishment, keeping its regular customers captive and using their stories to power the engine of his craft, which – courtesy of a time/space compressor – exists inside the shop.

Though we were reunited with Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave), her right-hand man Colonel Ibrahim (Alexander Devrient) and scientific advisor Shirley Anne Bingham (Ruth Madeley), Mel Bush (Bonnie Langford) was missing from the line-up.
