The new $2 billion airport at Bugesera is an ambitious project to turn Rwanda into a regional aviation hub, but the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warns that its cost will add to the country’s public debt. After selling a 60 percent stake in the airport to Qatar, the two shareholders had to find up to $2 billion, which is the revised cost of completing the airport, expected in 2026.

The approved candidates who will be on the ballot are Paul Kagame of the ruling Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF), Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party and independent candidate Phillippe Mpayimana. None of the trio is new to this contest. The two Kagame opponents have run – and lost – against him before.

Nairobi, April 13 -- Rwanda's President Paul Kagame, again, expressed his frustration about how Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states deployed troops in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) without first engaging Rwanda about the matter. He said it bothered him that South Africa and other SADC countries never reached out to Rwanda which is currently in direct tension with the DRC over the conflict in eastern Congo.

Rwanda and Tanzania are moving to open a new border post, as the two countries deepen trade ties at a time trade and political forces pull regional partners in different directions. The new post will be opened at Tanzania’s Kyerwa district in Kagera Region to provide a second passage for people and goods and reduce pressure on the Rusumo border post. Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, January Makamba, said this in Kigali during his recent four-day visit to Rwanda.
