Black Medea was performed by WAAPA Aboriginal Acting Students, as the culmination of their yearlong course and crewed, built and designed by WAAPA Production and Design students. An adaptation of Euripides classic tale, this version, by Wesley Enoch, blends Ancient Greek and Australian indigenous culture. Medea sacrifices her connection to country and family links to pursue love - a disastrous decision.

Everyman is a modern adaptation of a medieval mystery play, that for the last few years has been studied by WAAPA Second Year Acting Students. This year, that cohort present this text publicly, in the unusual performance space of the Edith Spiegeltent. The audience are guests at the birthday celebration of “Everyone”, with some audience sharing a table with the guest of honour, and the action taking place around them.

The Laramie Project has been a popular choice of production, with high schools and universities in the years since its inception in 2000. Not only does the show have compelling themes, with its examination of small-town attitudes, homophobia, and the examination of hate crime, but it offers the young cast the opportunity to engage with and study verbatim theatre, offers a large and flexible cast size, and has engaging and challenging acting roles.

This WA premiere was directed with a sense of fun by Melanie Hillman, performed by WAAPA Third Year Music Theatre students, and designed, built, and crewed by WAAPA Production and Design students. Raising eyebrows at the matinee performance, this queer coded musical, with a lesbian romance and a non-binary major character, was met with expressions of “Ooh its very different!” Quickly followed by “And it’s very good”.

Beautiful Burnout is a Scottish play that explores the world of boxing - both the passion and love for the sport as well as its potential for damage. Explored through young boxers including a young Cameron Burns, and from the outside from the perspective of Cameron’s mother, this 90-minute play was performed by half of the current WAAPA Third Year Acting Cohort, and crewed, designed, and built by WAAPA Production and Design Students.
