A group of tourists were fired on by suspected militants and the injured were taken to the district’s main hospital for treatment, authorities said. Most of the 26 people killed are understood to be tourists.

The results of the elections to the 18th Lok Sabha show that people of India asserted their prowess to defend the Constitution and the secular democratic character of the republic. The vast electorate brought down the earlier strength of the ruling BJP from 303 to 240. The BJP is now 32 seats short of a majority on its own. However, its NDA allies added 52 seats to the BJP tally. Thus, the NDA got 292 seats, which is 20 more than the required majority.

The failure of BJP to get past 272 has brought back the NDA into the forefront. While Vajpayee came to power and led the NDA Government in 1998, still there was a strong imprint of the BJP politics in the Government. Among other things which were part of Hindutva agenda that time was the appointment of Venkatchaliah Commission to review the Constitution and Saffronisation of the textbooks and introduction of courses in astrology and Paurohitya (Rituals) in the curriculum.
