    When I was 8 years old, 63 years ago in 1962, something happened that I have never forgotten. My father was teaching at Mafuta Primary School in Chief Mafuta’s area in the Eastern Province of Zambia in Southern Africa. I had contracted the bilharzia, or schistosomiasis tropical parasite when I lived in the village. The horrible symptoms are that each time I urinated, I felt pain, and there was blood in my urine.

    It is easy to take everyday life, including the holidays, for granted. We, as Americans, have generally lived prosperous, stable, predictable lives for many decades. It is tempting to blame anyone who draws attention to the tumultuous events of the last three months as the troublemaker. Some will ask why we can’t get along, pretend, plug our ears, bury our proverbial ostrich heads in the sand, and quietly enjoy the holidays.

The results began rolling in as TV reporters reported breathlessly.
