Jazz musicians, soul line dancers, ceramic figurines and a queer council take over the Twin Cities arts scene this weekend. The Twin Cities Jazz Festival will return for its 27th year, bringing more than 100 local and national musicians to venues across the metro. One artist in St. Paul will piece together Mexican folk traditions through ceramics and quilts, while another will host a soul line dance party at Minnehaha Falls.

In the Twin Cities art scene this weekend, a dance festival in St. Paul celebrates Minnesota’s hip-hop legacy, spotlighting women artists, choreographers and krump dancers. Over on Rice Street, the Asian Street Food Night Market brings together more than 35 vendors alongside emerging Asian musicians and dance troupes. In Minneapolis, the Somali Museum launches its first summer festival with art workshops and performances by Somali artists on Lake Street.

Shameka Bogan didn’t grow up celebrating Juneteenth. Raised in a small town in Alabama, she said the Fourth of July was the holiday that brought out flags, fireworks, grilled meats and family pride. “I had heard of Juneteenth and I kind of knew what it was but the Fourth of July was a huge thing for us,” Bogan said.

Fifty years after the first wave of Southeast Asian migration to the United States, a new art exhibit at Xia Gallery in St. Paul asks what it means to call this country home — and how queerness, memory and cultural survival shape that experience. Just a few miles away, more than 100 artists will fill Swede Hollow Park for the annual “Art in the Hollow” festival, featuring live music and dance.

Sixteen large-scale alebrije sculptures have taken up residence on St. Paul’s Raspberry Island, transforming the riverfront into a zoo of multicolored, mythical creatures. Adorned with horns, wings, scales, jagged teeth and bulging eyes, the papiermâché animals are part of a new outdoor art show from the Minnesota Latino Museum. The show “Alebrijes: Keepers of the Island,” features works by four Mexico City-based papier-mâché artists.
