Sofia is four years old with dark curls, and wears a black backpack. It carries the constant supply of intravenous nutrition on which she depends due to short bowel syndrome, a condition that prevents her from absorbing nutrients like other children. Her mother Deysi Vargas says Sofia’s life is much better than it was before. The child was born in Mexico, where she spent two years going from hospital to hospital.
