Amnesty International is calling for the immediate release of South Sudanese government critic Morris Mabior Awikjok Bak, who has been detained by the National Security Service (NSS) for over 400 days. South Sudan's Minister of Justice has ordered Bak's release and the dropping of all charges. Arrested in Kenya in February 2023 and forcibly returned to South Sudan, Bak has been held at the National Security Service headquarters in Juba.

The International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, appealed Tuesday for information and evidence of atrocities in Sudan's western Darfur region, saying his ongoing investigation “seems to disclose an organized, systematic and a profound attack on human dignity." South Sudan researcher Joshua Craze, who visited the ongoing peace talks between South Sudan's government and opposition groups in Nairobi, says there's a real opportunity to address important issues at the talks. However, with elections scheduled for December, the government has little time and might be seeking a consensus to postpone the vote.
