In addition to the daily ritual that I am privileged to perform of wrapping tefillin, I always associate tefillin with an important episode in my life. Ironically, it is related to my bar mitzvah but not for the usual reason. When I became a bar mitzvah, I presented a sermon Shabbat morning that was identical to the one delivered by my three brothers on their bar mitzvah day. It was a Torah discussion written by my grandfather, Torah giant Rabbi Yosef Segal.

All of us likely agree that it is highly encouraged to spread the sentiment of “good morning” in every venue possible. Walk past a stranger on the way to work and say, “Good morning.” Send a text or email early in the morning and start with “Good morning.” Call a company or service-oriented business after 9 a.m. and begin the conversation with “Good morning.”Kudos to those who give better impressions of themselves and our people by regularly adhering to these practices.

Popsicles are fun and delicious and a reminder of the fun, free-spirited summer days which were so relaxing and innocent. When I think of a popsicle (and its delicious relative, the creamsicle) it brings me back to my youth and a nostalgic feeling of great enjoyment and satisfaction dominates my thoughts. I often ask myself, why do these amazing frozen treats taste differently these days?

Segals are traditionally Leviim. The letters of the name (samach-gimel-lamed) has often been explained as an abbreviation for Sgan LaKohen (assistant to the Kohen). My grandfather (Rabbi Yosef Segal, zt”l) took our Levite heritage very seriously. He is the author of both Torat Leviim and Yalkut Leviim. His Magnum Opus, Torat Leviim, deals with the requirements and jobs of a Levi in the Holy Temple. I don’t know of another halachic work that is dedicated to that topic.

It is amazing how much of our tradition involves separation: think meat and milk, holy and mundane, separation during prayer, and many more. It is interesting how all of the traditional areas of separation create a closer (and not separate) bond with ourCcreator. We pray better, we eat properly, we bring more purity and spirituality to our relationships. Separation equals closeness. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder.
