Planned upgrades for a parking lot at a Calgary park that weren't sitting right with many residents will not be moving ahead. The parking lot in question, along a bike path near the Bow River on the north side of Edworthy Park is currently a bumpy ride, to say the least. The lot is full of potholes, loose gravel, and no lines to indicate where people can leave their vehicles.

Thieves behind residential break-ins often take victims' valuables, but along with that they often steal the sense of comfort they feel in their own home. Calgary police put out a warning this week about a recent uptick in residential break-ins, CityNews spoke with some Calgarians whose homes have been targeted. One woman says when the criminals showed up, her family was asleep in their Deer Run home. Any red flag was likely drowned out by the hum of the family's air conditioner.

A no rough-sleeping zone in and around Stephen Avenue is part of a comprehensive plan proposed by the Calgary Party to improve public safety. Brian Thiessen, the party leader who is poised to take a run for the mayor's chair in the upcoming municipal election, says it's just one proposal in a much larger public safety platform. He says the city isn't adequately addressing the issue of homelessness and that's something his party would make a priority if elected in October.

Wildfires continue to burn in Alberta and additional evacuation orders have been put in place near the B.C. border as the smoke that lingered in Calgary over the weekend somewhat cleared overnight. There are now 61 active wildfires in the province, 22 of which are deemed out of control. In northern Alberta, five communities are on an evacuation order.
