INTRODUCTION Human-induced changes, such as habitat degradation and overexploitation, are driving the rapid loss of biodiversity, presently recognized as the sixth mass extinction on Earth (Ceballos et al., 2020; Cowie et al., 2022). Biodiversity losses go beyond species-level extinctions because many species’ populations face strong declines or extirpation.
