The 20 months of the Congress government in Karnataka has seen costs of several essentials increasing, with taxes and prices going up, providing no respite to common people. This has given ammunition to the Opposition to target the government, arguing that the government is taxing people, unable to bear the fiscal burden of funding the five guarantee schemes, which costs the State exchequer nearly ₹60,000 crore annually.

On January 2, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and four Dalit Ministers met for dinner when Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar was abroad. The meeting highlighted once again factionalism in the ruling Congress in Karnataka. The main subject of discussion at dinner was apparently the implementation of a specific reform mentioned in the Congress’s Udaipur Declaration, which is the principle of ‘one person, one post’.

A political giant, an able statesman, a visionary administrator, a harbinger of reforms, a charismatic leader — Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna (S.M. Krishna), the former Chief Minister of Karnataka and former External Affairs Minister, was all this and more. The 92-year-old Congress veteran-turned-BJP senior leader passed away at his residence in Bengaluru on December 10, 2024, following prolonged ailment, according to family sources.

Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna, or SMK, was one of the most well-educated, suave, sophisticated, soft-spoken politicians of Karnataka, who has served as member of both Houses of Karnataka legislature and Indian Parliament. He was a harbinger of reforms in all aspects of Karnataka’s administration. In 1999, when he took over the reins of power from the Janata Dal government led by J. H. Patel, Karnataka’s economy was in dire straits.

Buoyed by the Congress’s victory in byelections to three Legislative Assembly seats, the party has now decided to hold a mega convention on December 5 in Hassan, a fortress of its arch rival Janata Dal (Secular). Ahead of the winter session of the legislature in Belagavi, which is likely to be stormy, the party’s backward class leaders have decided to hold the convention in a move to rebuild the image of the government led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
