1 INTRODUCTION Protected areas globally serve as crucial sanctuaries for biodiversity, playing a pivotal role in conserving endangered species and maintaining ecological balance (Gaston et al., 2008; Hannah, 2008; Oldekop et al., 2016). These designated spaces, ranging from mountain ranges to marine reserves, aim to act as a shield against habitat degradation, conserving diverse ecosystems for current and future generations (Joppa & Pfaff, 2011; Kubiak, 2020).
