Prescott High School's now retired, longtime head of the United States Air Force JROTC program often coaxed his students to be good stewards of their school and community. Be it repainting "P" Mountain, recruiting students for the leadership-focused program, marching in the Prescott Veterans Day Parade or donating time to local charitable causes, including restocking food pantries, the 100 or so JROTC students every year were celebrated for their commitment to serving others.

A long time ago in a faraway place - Clearwater, Florida - a young girl who might bear a resemblance to the writer of this column - pondered an uncertain future. She knew she was going to college. Two college-educated parents destined her to similar pursuits without any real conversation about whether or not that might or might not be a choice. Mom was a teacher, Dad an accountant - neither of those professions were appealing to me!
