The rhododendrons announce the temperature, wound as tight as a cigar wrapper, fat flowers pointed like the tip of a rocket. Up, left, right, towards the barn, towards the neighbors, they are ready to explode. The colors will be garish, as nature flaunts her wares in the great flower marketplace of spring. “Come hither, no, me, come here” they will call the bees. But not today. That purple, the bright red, the pink, are still tight furled. It is not a year for a flower to be in the vanguard.

It is luxury to sit by the fire, and I choose a chair opposite the one I usually sit in, at this time of day. This one and that one both are good fire-viewing chairs. I realize as I sit, that this one has a draft.

Nancy Adams·Follow3 min read·--I slept in, the warm flannel sheets and pajamas just too sweet to leave just to light a fire, and drink some coffee, which means now I sit and it is light enough to see the school buses picking up their kids and I am of that age that sniffs and says “We walked to school from here” but I don’t say that, oh no. I just look out the window and try to figure out why one place still has snow, and another place does not.

Probably Levi Pierce himself, the local leader in things civic and in hardware, provided the original stove. It would have been state of the art, judging from his advertisements in the paper.

The ashes went into a new ash can, that a sister delivered me. It has a tight lid and there is no chance of an errant spark igniting, say, a house. That is a comfort. I listen to the washing machine. It is a side-opener, with a drum.

Being out in the rain, which we have to do and I don’t want to do. No, I think the story is about Dad. Daddy was a lawyer, you see, and often quipped that it was drunken drivers that put his daughters through college.

I have taken mine to the dining room, in my long pajamas, slippers, and bathrobe. I say long pajamas because somehow or other they have lost their memory, and every day they grow a few more inches. If it were not for the bulky slippers, they would slip right past my feet.

The cleaning out of ashes, the making of a fire, the logs to use. Should I make coffee, or tea. Should I sit by the fire or by the table. Should I let Annie out or not? I open the door for her, and at her hesitation, I shut it again, for it is snow and more snow out there. I feed her, but she arches her back at me.

The lights are off but the device screen demands attention with its brightness. When I look away, I see shadow, rugs, pet beds, and then the glow of the firelight matching on the kitchen table, the Grange chairs, and then old rocker. They cast shadows on the dining room wall. The thing is, I want to see the snow.

Nancy Adams·Follow5 min read·--The laundry room, right off the kitchen, dominates my thoughts these days, and schedule too. Wash, dry, not so fast. Towels definitely not so fast. Up they go on the drying racks suspended from the ceiling, but not until the tablecloths, napkins and tea towels come down. These linens are required to be hung to dry. I would say hung out, but out includes three feet of snow and so they are hung in. Not every house has drying racks suspended from the ceiling.
