This is the conclusion of a long campaign by For Women Scotland (FWS), who contested the Scottish Government’s position that transgender women could hold positions on public boards designated for women as part of a quota policy to increase representation.

This view has led to what Susan Scott Parker, founder of Business Disability International, calls the “compliance paradox.” Scott-Parker points out that this is a high risk strategy for businesses, where bare minimum disability support is offered and employees have to jump through hoops to participate.

Public costs have spiralled since the pandemic, which is limiting our ability as a country to invest in public services, which in turn create more ill health and limits to working capacity. It has been a vicious cycle.

Neurodiversity awareness and guidance for workplace and careers have proliferated since the pandemic and it is getting quite confusing. We seem to have fallen into a pattern where all roads lead to some sort of tick list or “toolkit” and resulting in extra demands on managers and human resources with seemingly few benefits for neurodivergent employees (and potential employees).
