Madison, Wisconsin is full of surprises, sometimes entertaining, always enlightening. But I didn’t plan for an abortion protest during a family weekend. The morning after my nephew’s wedding in a rural community, we set off for brunch in the city. With time to kill, we visited the weekly farmer’s market and circled the Capitol in search of vegetables and breads.

I always thought I would have kids someday. I wanted a baby before I turned 30, I used to say. But as I approached and then sailed past that arbitrary deadline, I became less and less sure. Motherhood always sounded like something that another version of me would be ready for, someday. But then real life caught up with that hypothetical “someday,” and I wasn’t ready. I loved the life my husband I had built together—quiet evenings at home with our two cats, international trips every year or two.

To the editor: I am writing in support of two candidates for the Waukesha School Board: Stephanie Fidlin and Angelique Byrne. A few weeks ago, I emailed each of them with questions about their positions. They responded with detailed information. Byrne is an educator herself, and Fidlin is active in the Waukesha schools PTO. Their personal knowledge and dedication to children is evident. Both are committed to policies that benefit every child.

Thanks to Title IX, my daughter’s generation grew up with a belief system—a mindset that young women deserve the same as men. For my trip to Hamburg, I knew no German beyond danke. So, when the Polizei officer stomped up to me on the subway, I handed him my pass only because others had done so. After seeing it, he stiffened his back, lasered his eyes and shouted something. I slunk down, wondering what I had done.
