1 INTRODUCTION Many atmospheric phenomena are tightly coupled to ocean processes, and the correct forecasting of these phenomena relies on a good representation of atmosphere–ocean interactions (Vellinga et al., 2020). A clear example of this is the prediction of the formation and development of tropical cyclones, which depends strongly on correctly capturing the transfer of ocean heat into the atmosphere.
