These acts of violence are a chilling reminder: 54 years ago, at Kent State University, the Ohio National Guard shot and killed four students and injured nine others.

On Sunday, April 7, 2024, the bridge that has stood for 99 years in Historic Oakland, Oregon, will become lost to time and relegated to the past. A celebration was planned for the community to say farewell with one final walk across the bridge and the opportunity to share years of collective memories. It is an early spring day and although clouds billow overhead, the blue sky prevails for the bittersweet occasion.

Recently, in the dark hours before dawn, a thief snuck into the center of downtown Historic Oakland, Oregon, with the intention of stealing from the town. A theft not in the form of breaking storefront windows to grab goods, or absconding with items given a monetary value, but by vandalizing the tree that is the symbol of the season. This was an attempt to take away from the community something of greater worth, a tradition that brings light to this small town.
