A bus driver in Perry County was charged Sunday after police said he tickled elementary school students without their consent. John Joseph Straining Jr., 50, of Duncannon, was charged with multiple counts of felony institutional sexual assault, indecent assault of someone younger than 13, unlawful contact with minors, corruption of minors and endangering the welfare of children, as well as summary harassment, following an investigation that started in April.

Mechanicsburg Area School Board is divided into three regions, and only one of those regions will be contested in the May 20 primary. In Region 1, there are two seats open and only two candidates—cross-filed candidate Brian Sanker and Republican Richard Bradley. In Region 2, only Morgan Strehlow is cross-filed on both ballots. For voters in Region 3, they will be able to vote for one of two candidates for the single seat open.

Two school boards on the eastern part of Cumberland County will see contested races this year. There are four seats open for East Pennsboro Area School Board, with six total candidates looking to get a party’s nomination to reach the November election. For voters in that area, only Republicans will have a contested ballot. Only three of the six candidates are cross-filed, with two only on the Republican ballot and one on the Democratic ballot.

In addition to statewide races for judicial seats, Cumberland County residents can expect to see at least one local judge race on the ballot. For Cumberland County Court of Common Pleas, there are two candidates running this year to fill a seat—Sasha Sacavage is only on the Democratic ballot, while Kathryn Silcox is cross-filed on both ballots.

Of the seven Cumberland County row offices up for election this year, only one of them is contested in this year’s primary. And assuming there are no write-in campaign wins on the Democratic tickets for the other row offices, the race for prothonotary may again be the only one contested in November. Many row office incumbents are seeking re-election, with no challenger against them in the primary.
