YORK — Alisha Vavra of Gresham was recently crowned York Czech Queen 2023. After being crowned the last three years, Vavra had much time to practice her “queen duties.”Vavra said, “When I put on my kroj two weeks ago, I just lit up inside. This title brings me such joy.”This fall Vavra will graduate from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where she is studying music education and will become a high school band teacher at Lawrence - Nelson after graduation.

Students of St. Joseph Catholic School will soon have the opportunity to learn outdoors. The school's outdoor classroom, currently under construction, was spearheaded by St. Joseph preschool teachers Lori Haarmann and DeAnne Erickson. The pair said they who were inspired by the idea when mentioned at an educational conference. Haarmann said their first step was to contact Katie Krause, a UNL Extension educator who has experience working with ECHO (Early Childhood Health Outdoors).

YORK -- “We have some bakers in the house,” proclaimed Carol Hofmann, a workshop instructor for this week’s 4-H cupcake decorating. The York County Fair is only a couple of weeks away and 4-Hers have been practicing how to bake the best sweet treats that will be on exhibit for all eyes to see. Under the guidance of Hofmann, founder of Ruby Rose Cupcakes in Sutton, youth learned how to decorate several summer-themed cupcake designs.

“Stitching Together” was a suitable theme for this year’s Henderson Community Days, as area residents joined one another in participating in a weekend long series of events. Just as in previous years, Henderson maintained their traditional activities along with new. This year, families vied for their chance to win chamber bucks through the “passport competition." Each participant had to pick up a flyer with the schedule of events from the Henderson Foodmart or City Hall.

It was a lucky day for the Renner Family of York on Thursday as they found Pirate Jim’s medallion at the York County Fairgrounds. The site was appropriate considering the York County Fair is just around the corner and it’s celebrating its 150 year anniversary this year. The treasure hunt had people on their knees, poking around the wide open, grassy area on the south side of the Ag Hall Building.
