Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an increasingly common global burden (1). The diagnosis of COPD is currently made on the basis of the presence of airflow limitation, defined as an FEV1/FVC ratio <0.7 on spirometry. However, airflow limitation on spirometry is detectable only at the late stage of cumulative damage to airways and lung parenchyma.
