    The population of strays was on the rise in the neighborhood, and this bothered the residents, especially when it came to crossbreeds. They too were strays, but the blood flowing in their veins was mixed with that of foreign lands. In bearing and appearance they were of a different sort altogether. There were also a number of pet dogs of excellent pedigree who lived in homes.

    Nasera Sharma was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, in 1948. She has authored fourteen novels, at least nine short story collections, and several works of nonfiction. Fluent in Urdu, Pashto, Hindi, English, and Persian, she is also a prolific translator of classical and contemporary Persian literature into Hindi and has edited and translated a voluminous corpus of writings from Asia and Africa, published in six volumes.
