An illegal immigrant in New York has been arrested for allegedly threatening a U.S. attorney with a knife. The incident occurred Tuesday in the state capital of Albany when Saul Morales-Garcia, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, allegedly approached John A. Sarcone III, a U.S. attorney for the Northern District of New York, with a knife at a Hilton hotel. Morales-Garcia allegedly pulled out the knife and lunged toward the federal prosecutor, the Times Union newspaper reports.

Social Security is expected to run out a year earlier than projected last year, according to the Social Security Board of Trustees on Wednesday. Last year, the board projected that the combined reserves of the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance and Disability Insurance Trust Funds would run out in 2035. This year, the board moved the projection up to 2034 for the funds to pay for all scheduled benefits and associated administrative costs, with 81 percent of benefits payable at that time.

Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson has made nearly $3 million from her memoir, “Lovely One,” according to a financial disclosure. The disclosure released Tuesday showed that Jackson received $2 million of the advance last year for the book, in addition to about $900,000 that publisher Penguin Random House paid her in 2023, Politico reported. Her memoir reached No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list following its release.

President Trump's pardons allowed $1.3 billion in restitution to go unpaid, according to a report by Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee. The report released Tuesday reviewed court records for the crimes that were pardoned, which include those in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol, The Hill news outlet reported.

The Justice Department has eliminated roughly 4,500 jobs and plans to cut 1,500 more from the FBI, according to the agency's new budget proposal. The DOJ's fiscal 2026 budget request released Monday aims to reduce 5,093 positions, 4,500 of which are already vacant due to the Trump administration's deferred resignation program. The 4,500 jobs already eliminated have resulted in a savings of at least $470 million, according to the proposal.
