My father died on a beautiful day. The sky was a drinkable blue, the air warm in the back of your throat when you took a deep breath, summer sweet on your tongue. In the morning, as we drove up to the hospice to sit by his bed, it was already warm enough outside for bare arms. I made a silent plan to leave before the heat started to fade, to go and sit in a park in my bra. That's an acceptable thing to do, I thought. The world is collapsing, but I can still sunbathe.

There are few moments in a woman’s life more vulnerable than when she is pregnant. As she prepares for, and then experiences, childbirth, she will likely interact with NHS services more than at any other point. Too many women are being failed by a system they have no choice but to trust wholeheartedly. For Black women, these failures occur with horrifying frequency, and that trust has been obliterated.
