Some, like Faithful Friends Animal Society and A Buddy for Life, Inc., care for and protect the animals in our state. Others, like the Delaware Museum of Nature and Science and Newark Center for Creative Learning School, bolster education and sustainability.

    “Hi, little babies!” says Hilary Taylor, a wildlife rehabilitator and educator, as she leans over a plastic bin lined with straw and soft, fuzzy fabric. She lifts a corner of the blanket inside and reveals a tiny creature with a white face, a pointed nose and perfectly round ears. “We’ve got a whole bunch of baby opossums in there, oh, yes!” she exclaims. Taylor gently lifts one of the opossums, watching as it curls its minuscule pink hands over her finger.

    In 2008, Lisa Black left her corporate job to pursue what had been a side hustle full time. Launching Garnet Girl LLC, she’s produced dozens of award-winning films, and in 2016, then Gov. Jack Markell appointed her as co-chair of the Motion Picture and Television Development Commission to promote the First State as a prime filming location. Although Lisa Black wasn’t born in Delaware, few film producers are more dedicated to our state’s economic and artistic development.

    At first glance, 1305 N. Franklin St. in Wilmington is an unassuming spot partially obscured by mature trees. It’s easy to walk past without sparing a second glance at the little sign that marks the property as historic, but if you continue down the hand-laid brick sidewalk, you’ll find an oasis full of art, literature and history, run by an all-female group of artists.

She’s a sixth-grade student at Newark Center for Creative Learning (NCCL) School, where she and some of her peers are discussing what they envision for the future of Delaware.
