    Human genetic material can be inadvertently captured and enriched from environmental DNA samples. This has both legal and ethical implications for future research. This work exacerbates the difficulty of decoupling human subjects research from other types of research. Under US federal law, research that collects individually identifiable information about human beings is subject to greater regulation than other forms of research.
