    Friday marks the launching of the 1 for 8 Billion campaign for a fair and inclusive process to select the next United Nations secretary-general in 2026. As the UN prepares to hold the Summit of the Future on Sunday, our campaign wants to ensure that we find the best person to implement what member states agree on at the summit; make progress where they don’t; and deliver a better future for the world’s eight billion people. Ten years ago, I co-founded the previous incarnation of the campaign.

Our Barometer surveyed over 36,000 people in 30 countries, representing a wide spectrum of regions, political systems, and income levels—painting a picture of the attitudes, concerns, and hopes of 5.5 billion people.  We asked about democracy in a number of ways, and however we framed the question, the results held.

    Last year was tough for United Nations peacekeeping operations, especially in Africa. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, local people demonstrated angrily against the perceived inability of peacekeepers to protect civilians in the east of the country. In Mali, the junta government became increasingly hostile to the peacekeeping presence.
