Apple has suspended a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature that drew criticism and complaints for making repeated mistakes in its summaries of news headlines. The tech giant had been facing mounting pressure to withdraw the service, which sent notifications that appeared to come from within news organisations' apps. "We are working on improvements and will make them available in a future software update," an Apple spokesperson said.

A jump in energy and food prices hit the US last month, as progress stabilising prices remained elusive. On average, prices in December were up 2.9% compared with a year earlier, up from 2.7% in November, the Labor Department said. Egg prices shot up more than 36%, as a bout of bird flu hit supply and led to shortages.

The move comes just days after the tech giant, owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, said it was ending a fact-checking programme criticised by President-elect Donald Trump and Republicans and elevated conservatives to key leadership positions.
