Six Democratic candidates are running for New Jersey governor in the 2025 primary election, scheduled for Jun. 10. The candidates chosen to represent both Democratic and Republican parties will have their name appear on the November general election ballot along with any Independent candidates running. Registered Democratic Party voters outnumber registered Republican or Independent voters by more than 825,000, according to state data from May 2025. And their political views vary more widely.

Six Democrats and five Republicans are running for New Jersey governor in the Jun. 10 primary election. Some of the Democratic candidates have been described as “progressive” or favorable among “left-wing” voters. In April 2025, six self-described progressive groups endorsed Ras Baraka as their candidate of choice for governor. Endorsements came from Rutgers teachers’ unions, New Jersey Working Families Party, New Jersey Citizen Action, and Make the Road Action.

Bloomfield township purchased the former Essex County vocational high school property known as Bloomfield Tech in Bloomfield, N.J., for $10 million in December 2023—nine months after Essex County bought the same property for $100—raising questions among residents about the deal’s timeline, intentions, and building’s future use. Voters in the 10th Congressional District will go to the polls Tuesday for a special primary election. They will select their candidate to finish the remainder of the late U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Jr.’s term representing the district, to be decided by a special general election in September. Mail-in balloting is already underway; early in-person voting took place July 12 – 14.

Eleven candidates are running in a July 16 special Democratic primary election to fill New Jersey’s 10th District congressional seat previously held by Rep. Donald Payne, who died in April while serving his sixth term and running for reelection. The candidate who wins the July special primary will appear on a special general election ballot in September to determine who will complete Payne’s term through Jan. 3, 2025.
