A study published in the peer-reviewed Equine Veterinary Journal provides hopeful news for owners of show jumpers who have undergone colic surgery. Researchers in Italy noticed that most research in return to competition data for horses after colic surgery had focused on racehorses. Research had shown previously shown 75 to 90 percent of horses generally resume their chosen sport after surgery.

The New Mexico legislature passed a bill recently aimed at helping to address free-roaming horse herds on state and private land which are not part of the federal Bureau of Land Management's oversight. The measure, which cleared the New Mexico House of Representatives March 5 and the Senate March 22, was based on a report which cited some free-roaming horse herds that are showing signs of malnourishment, and some that are damaging private properties due to overpopulation.
