At the California Irrigation Institute’s annual conference, I had the opportunity to lead a discussion about the future of our industry — where we stand today, and more importantly, where we go from here. Our conversation echoed a central theme that every decision in irrigation, whether technology, policy or resource management, has a ripple effect. The Environmental Protection Agency’s recent decision to pause development of its WaterSense spray sprinkler nozzle specification serves as proof of something important: when we speak up, we make a difference. And when we speak as a unifying voice, we make a positive impact. Thanks to the collective efforts of the irrigation industry, led by the Irrigation Association, we’ve secured an opportunity to shape standards that truly reflect the realities of our work.

With the farm economy under mounting pressure, the resilience of our agricultural community is being tested like never before. According to the USDA’s Economic Research Service, net farm income is projected to decrease by $6.0 billion — or 4.1% — to $140.7 billion in 2024.
