This Memorial Day, The World Newspaper would like to highlight the efforts of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3440 in Bandon. The Frank C. High Medal of Honor Post aims to give a sense of purpose and camaraderie to veterans of oversees conflicts through community service and engagement. Affectionately known as ‘The Post’, VFW 3440 was formed in February, 1936, by its now-namesake Frank C. High, along with a group of 26 other veterans.

In a search warrant execution that lasted four days and involved more than eight agencies, animals were finally relocated from West Coast Game Park Safari. The roadside zoo has long drawn complaints and regulatory citations culminating on May 18 with 310 animals living in subpar conditions being seized and sent to more reputable facilities and sanctuaries for specialized care.

On May 14, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released their preliminary findings on the HondaJet that failed to stop upon landing in North Bend. The incident, which took place early in the morning on April 7, saw the plane end up in the bay injuring its 5 passengers.

May 14 was an exciting day for many of Marshfield High’s graduating seniors, as the annual scholarship assembly was held in the auditorium. The Marshfield High School Community & Memorial Scholarship Fund has grown to oversee 182 different scholarships which are awarded to students via a 19-member selection committee.

The Coos Watershed Association’s (CoosWA) biggest event of the year, the Mayfly Festival, returns to Mingus Park on May 17, 2025. In addition to a free family friendly day filled with music, food, and fun, the fest is a great chance to learn more about how crucial waterways effect all of our lives here on the South Coast. “That’s the message of the whole festival, is that we live in a watershed and not many people know that,” said Alexa Carleton, Outreach Program Manager for the CoosWA.

At the Coos Bay City Council joint work session on April 22nd, consultants from ECOnorthwest gave a presentation for the Coos Bay Economic Opportunities Analysis (EOA) and Economic Development Strategic Plan (EDSP). The economic analysis and public policy research firm was brought on thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Ford Family Foundation. “An Economic Opportunities Analysis is something that’s mandated by state statute, and so this work will help inform updates to our comprehensive plan.

Following the HondaJet that skipped off the runway of Southwest Oregon Regional Airport on April 7, more information has come to light about runway excursions in that particular model of plane. According to a report by Aviation International News (AIN), this is the 20th time a HondaJet has run off of the runway, with 8 of those incidents coming after 2023. In fact, the incident in North Bend was one of two excursions to take place that same week.

On their way back to Roseburg after playing in North Bend, the Umpqua Community College (UCC) softball team was struck by an intoxicated driver at 9:56 PM on April 18. The driver, Johnathan Dowdy, 32, now faces a long list of felony charges including manslaughter, assault, and reckless endangerment. Dowdy’s Chevy Silverado swerved into the path of the team bus as it carried 10 people east on Oregon Route 42, near milepost 23, according to OSP press releases.

At the North Bend Community Center on April 15th, 2025, scores of Coos County citizens came out to attend the town hall of Senator Jeff Merkley. This is the 17th annual tour of town halls that the Senator has embarked on. Along with his fellow Oregonian Senator, Ron Wyden, Merkley is the only U.S. Senator to conduct in-person town halls in every county of their state.

The City of Coquille’s Finance Staff was tasked with discovering the root of a $10 million budget shortfall. This was first noticed in October of 2024 during expenditures on the Firehall and Library construction projects, when the City’s Local Government Investment Pool was creating a drawdown of its cash reserves.
