Jean-Matteo Bahoya gave Frankfurt the lead in the 10th minute as he completed a beautiful triangulation with Hugo Ekitike and Fares Chaibi.

Borussia Monchengladbach have lost precious points in the fight for Champions League qualification as they were pegged back in a late 1-1 draw at St Pauli in the Bundesliga. Gladbach broke the deadlock in the final act of the first half on Sunday as Ko Itakura tucked Franck Honorat's corner into the net with a header. Victory would have put Gladbach level on 46 points with Mainz, who currently occupy the last Champions League spot.

Union sit 14th and six points away from the drop zone, while Frankfurt missed the chance to retake third place, meaning in-form Mainz will retain their position in the top three.
