Several powerful aftershocks also followed the initial quake. According to the Associated Press, the death toll from the earthquake has surpassed 2,000, with Myanmar officials telling the news agency that this number is expected to rise.

    Even as Thailand reels from an earthquake that killed at least 17 people and damaged buildings in Bangkok, officials have been quick to reassure tourists that it is safe to travel to the country's many tourist destinations. Government officials said that no tourists have been injured and no tourist sights have been affected.
