The little-known Northern Water Supply Project on the state’s Eyre Peninsula could unlock an unprecedented period of economic prosperity for South Australia, Premier Peter Malinauskas says. The multibillion-dollar project, currently in the planning stage ahead of a final decision on whether to proceed, includes a 260ML per day desalination plant and 600km pipeline network to supply water largely for industrial and commercial purposes.

South Australian outback adventurers and music fans are partying with their interstate cousins after getting last-minute permission to drive on the muddy Birdsville Track. Recent heavy rains in the state’s north saw the iconic track closed with around 40 vehicles and 100 punters stranded at the Mungerannie Hotel, just a few hours’ drive short of their destination of the Big Red Bash.

It was the first multipurpose arts complex to open in an Australian capital – four months before the Sydney Opera House - and now it celebrates 50 years. Chief executive Douglas Gautier said the Festival Centre had been “the heart of the arts” in SA since its opening in 1973. “On our golden anniversary we look back at our rich past and ahead to our future with great pride,” Mr Gautier said.

I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve been, it’s probably eight or ten. I first went as a wide-eyed 19-year-old. It was my first trip overseas and the casual chaos of the place after growing up in orderly Australia was intoxicating.
