I’m heading home from a family wedding this weekend. I had a plane ticket, but in the end, decided to travel back with two of my uncles and my cousin. Most of my dad’s family are evangelicals, my aunts and uncles are children of missionaries or missionaries themselves. And as a family we like to have debates. The service was in a stunning church in St. AndrewsHere is a rough sketch of a discussion with my relatives. Though it could as well be one with a chunk1 of my Christian friends.

Both my grandmother and my great aunt passed away recently, which has caused me to muse upon death. Slowly, then all at onceWhat is death? I guess it's the ending of the process of consciousness. Not that we really know what consciousness is? In that sense, do I die when I go to sleep? My consciousness in the morning often seems pretty unconnected to the consciousness of the night before. Things that seem so important when I go to bed seem trivial when I wake up.

I interact with journalists quite a lot and I have specific preferences. Not just for articles, but for behaviour. And journalists do behave pretty strangely at times. This account comes from talking to journalists on ~10 occasions. Including being quoted in ~5 articles. I do not trust journalists to abide by norms of privacy. If I talk to a friend and without asking, share what they said, with their name attached, I expect they'd be upset.

Recently my team and I have been working on FindingConsensus.AI. It’s a site to show how public figures would answer specific questions about Artificial Intelligence (but it could work for anything). Often when thinking, I defer to figures I trust, so seeing a spread of public figures gives me a head start. I hope that if we all knew what we all thought, we’d be better at finding consensus, too.

The blog post contains a preamble about the OpenAI non-disparagement agreement stuff which I assume you all know. We need to do better than relying on the integrity of individual engineers against millions of dollars paid to them to keep quiet. Here are three suggestions:Offer to match 50% of funds lost by whistleblowers. This might sound like both an insult and a huge waste. But I think people really are motivated by $500k or more, that they expected to earn.
