When we were finally driving out of Silver Spring—family of four packed into a minivan, and pod soon to follow—I waited until we turned off the Beltway and onto I-270 North through Maryland to get out my phone and quickly compose a WhatsApp message to Forest Glen Moms: “Just rolled out of silver spring, moving to Chicago to be near our family—thanks for everything, moms chat!!” I saw several people begin typing, but I didn’t wait.

Somewhere on my Instagram feed, I briefly scroll past, and then return to, a video of a mountain goat with large horns, or perhaps an ibex. It is not specified, and for the purposes of the video, it does not seem to matter. The goat is sticking out its tongue at a smaller goat with much smaller horns, presumably a female, and moving its tongue up and down in a way that would be anatomically impossible for a human. The female is backing away and dipping her head in response to his repeated advances.

When we arrived at the property, the first thing we did was grab handfuls of lavender and rosemary, the eponymous herbes de Provence, stripping the leaves from the sinewy stems and breathing deeply. The beating sun made the fragrance all the more lovely. Columns of cypress trees rose behind the house at the end of the driveway and the stone walls were covered in dangling plants that had grown dry in the August heat.

Over a year ago, my father invited me and my family to come to Maine for the solar eclipse. I said yes, thinking both that it was a magical idea and because at that point it seemed impossibly far away. Before April 8, 2024, I would have a new baby. It would be springtime, and therefore easier to be with children in Maine. As the date approached, it began to bear down on me. I say “bear” because I am always having dreams about bears surrounding the Maine house, making it impossible to go outside.
