Los Angeles, CA-based soul rockers The Altons vibrate on a whole other frequency. After years of cutting their teeth playing house shows and dive bars across their hometown, signing with Daptone Records, and landing a spot at this year’s Bonnaroo Music Festival alongside Thee Sinseers as one of the handful of Latine-led acts on the bill, the band is still pretty geeked out about being at the festival in any capacity. “I’m a seasoned festival goer,” says lead vocalist Adriana Flores.

“I am first a fan of hip hop. It’s what really brought me here,” says Laura Stylez, media personality and one of the hosts of Hot 97’s long-running morning radio show Ebro in the Morning. Born in Los Angeles and raised by Guatemalan parents, Stylez says the closest thing to finding community growing up was through the kids in her neighborhood who introduced her to the music of Snoop Dogg, NWA, and Dr. Dre.

“I always kind of felt like I could go back in time and that something would continue to happen forever, but I think that’s just youth,” folk singer-songwriter and guitarist Alynda Mariposa Segarra, who records under the name Hurray for the Riff Raff, tells Remezcla. It was a harsh but necessary realization — the difference between staying in the past versus honoring it — and it’s one of the main themes on their latest album, The Past is Still Alive.
