But to anyone who still has the capacity to think and feel amid the maelstrom of this administration, the catastrophes seem inexplicable — logically inexplicable, morally inexplicable, and even politically inexplicable, given the fact that Trump’s shenanigans are far less likely to gain adherents than to lose them.

We know how to soldier through each one to get to the end and how, finally, to survive and use our loss profitably to move forward. But a nation is a different thing. Among the many puzzles of this most mystifying of campaigns, in which a Nazi sympathizer, racist, misogynist, nativist, transphobe, and overall psychopath is still a possibility to win the presidency, there is one the solution of which may go some way toward explaining why the nation, or at least 47% of it, seems to have gone off its rocker. And that puzzle is the antipathy toward Joe Biden.

As J.D. Vance, his own vice-presidential running mate once said before Vance’s opportunism overrode his sanity and thin sliver of decency, “Donald Trump is our Hitler.” While a lot of people would agree, I know this pronouncement may make others uncomfortable. It seems hysterical, hyperbolic, just plain wrong. To them, nobody is Hitler, not even Trump.

MAGA bundles all their frustrations, angers, hatreds in one place. Last week, as every sentient being knows by now, Donald Trump, in what you might call his ongoing “Have You No Decency” Tour, brought the show to Arlington National Cemetery for a photo-op using graves and dead heroes as his props, because, after all, General Bone Spurs certainly thinks these brave men and women died so that he could claim to win an election he is very likely to lose.

Finally. Finally. Finally. For more than three weeks, many of us have been vacillating between the deepest, deepest despair, as Joe Biden insisted he would stay in a presidential race that he was virtually certain to lose and lose overwhelmingly, and a thin ray of hope that he would concede his impending defeat and let a new candidate and a restart give us at least a fighting chance to defeat the gravest threat to America and the world since Hitler.
