NEW IBERIA - At 6 p.m. Friday night, something will happen that has never taken place before on Catholic High's campus in New Iberia. The Panthers' baseball team will play host to a semifinal contest for the first time in school history against Dunham to kick off the best-of-3 Division III select semifinals. Moreover, it's the first time since 2019 Catholic-New Iberia has reached the semifinals in pursuit of the Panthers' first state title since 2001.

David Thibodaux's Jackson Jarrett has always been a long-distance kind of guy. From 800 meters all the way to cross country, Jarrett has run it. But by his own admission, 1600 meters is his preferred race. Wednesday at the District 4-4A meet at Comeaux, Jarrett claimed the top spot at his signature distance as he started the trek to the one thing that he most wants - a state title at 1600 meters. "My season so far has been pretty good," Jackson said.

KAPLAN - It was a day for double winners at the District 5-3A meet held at Kaplan High on Tuesday. Maybe the biggest winner was Kaplan junior Kevin Small. The defending Class 3A state champion in the discus, he took his first step towards defending that title with a win in his signature event at the district meet and added a win in the shot put and a fourth place finish in the javelin, which means he heads to the regional meet next week in all three events.

NEW IBERIA - Over the past generation or so, Catholic High of New Iberia has produced 15 state champions in outdoor pole vault - 27 total if you add indoor state titles as well. Led by 2021 Olympian Morgann LeLeleux Romero who, along with younger sister Reagann LeLeux, each with five outdoor state titles each,The list also included Gavin Gautreaux and Nick Russell with two titles each had Damian Breaux with one outdoor title.

It's always fun when you in at your home track meet in front of the home fans and supporters. Comeaux senior high jumper Warren Walker had that feeling Friday as he claimed the top spot in his signature even at Comeaux High's Tom Nolan Relays, named after the longtime track coach for the Spartans who in his career had a couple of state titles and numerous district and parish titles.

NEW IBERIA - On a night where meet records seemed to be falling like flies, four event winners stole the show at New Iberia Senior High's Tabasco Relays on Friday. Perhaps the biggest winner of the night was Lafayette High hurdler Kynadeh Dorsey, who won her first high school track meet in the 100 meter hurdles. Nice accomplishment considering that she had only started practicing the hurdles just shy of a month ago.

SCOTT - Terry Matthews' redemption tour almost didn't get off the ground. The Acadiana Renaissance Charter Academy junior hurdler, who missed out on the state track meet last year after being disqualified on a false state in the regional meet, was using the 2025 outdoor season to redeem himself and get and possibly win the state meet, battled a hamstring injury during the early part of the high school outdoor season. "I tore my hamstring but I'm good now," Matthews said.

St. Thomas More softball coach Andria Waguespack probably summed it up best as her Cougars took on District 4-4A and city rival Teurlings Catholic Tuesday. "It's a rivalry game, anything can happen," the long-time STM coach said after the Cougars run-ruled the Rebels 15-0 in five innings. "We came out the gate and were very aggressive offensively which gave us an advantage," Waguespack said after he team scored four runs in the first inning to take the early lead over Teurlings.

ABBEVILLE - Ascension Episcopal pitcher Jackson Devey has always had a reputation as a curve ball pitcher but can put a fastball across the plate every now and then. On Thursday night, both were working quite well as the Blue Gators' starter went all seven innings and scattered one run on four hits with nine strikeouts in a 9-1 win over Vermilion Catholic in District 6-1A action at Sellers Field. With the win, the Gators improved to 15-2 overall and 2-0 in district.
