    Like many Montrealers, Dominique Bérubé remembers exactly where she was on Dec. 6, 1989, when a gunman targeted women at École Polytechnique, killing 14. She was there. At a memorial event on McTavish Street Friday, McGill’s Vice-President (Research and Innovation) spoke publicly about that day for the first time. Bérubé was pursuing her Bachelor’s in Metallurgical Engineering at École Polytechnique. She knew most of the women who were killed. They were colleagues and classmates. They were her friends.

    For Vincent Wong, life truly is a journey. As a Loran Scholar, the Vancouverite moved across the country in 2021 to pursue his B.Sc. Honours in Neuroscience at McGill. He was drawn by The Neuro (The Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital), Canada’s largest neuroscience research centre. In the summer of 2022, Wong traveled to Yellowknife to conduct a research project on the unique health-care challenges in the North, an experience that would shift his career trajectory.

    In 1974, Chandra Madramootoo arrived at Macdonald Campus to pursue his BSc in Agricultural Engineering. He never left. “I loved the program. I loved the professors. I loved my courses,” said Madramootoo. “It was giving me exactly what I wanted in life. I was fulfilling a dream.”After also earning his MSc (1981) and his PhD (1985) at Mac, he accepted an 11th hour offer from McGill for an assistant professorship, declining opportunities at other universities.

    Five educators from four McGill faculties will be presented with a President’s Prize for Excellence in Teaching at the Fall Convocation ceremonies on Dec. 2. Created in 2000, the award honours outstanding teaching and its vital contribution to students’ academic experience. “While McGill is a research-focused university, teaching excellence is also at the core of what we do,” said McGill President Deep Saini.
