Lisa Farjam Bidoun was really born out of a reaction to 9/11 and the subsequent rise of Islamophobia and sensationalist Western media coverage of the Middle East. In the arts specifically, media coverage of the region was always quite superficial. I was interested in building bridges between cities like Cairo and Beirut, and working with the communities of writers and artists who lived there. Initially, Bidoun grew out of conversations between myself and my closest friend, Sunny Rahbar.

My father’s parents lived around the corner from Al-Ailat, the largest bakery in Gaza. Al-Ailat, which means “the family” in Arabic, is run by the Shehada clan, Christians who have been in Gaza for centuries. While the bakery started as a storefront in the Al-Rimal neighborhood, it has expanded over the years to occupy half of an entire block. Al-Ailat is more than a bakery; there’s a cafe with cute bistro chairs where you can eat sweets and drink coffee.

Friendship inflects and informs much of the artist Meriem Bennani’s work. Many of the actors in the films that comprise her dystopian science fictional film trilogy — Party on the CAPS (2018-19), Guided Tour of a Spill (2021), and Life on the CAPS (2022) — are old friends and family members, or artists whose work she admired from afar and later befriended whilst collaborating.
