When Zara Mohammed became the first female leader of one of the largest representative bodies for British Muslims in 2021, she already had a lot on her plate: rising Islamophobia, the Covid-19 pandemic, and a government refusing to engage with the group. The then 29-year-old could not have imagined three years later, she would be facing one of the biggest challenges of her career - rioting across England and Northern Ireland, often explicitly targeting Muslims, and still no government contact.

It was the summer of 2022 when Benjamin Stanley was left pleased and slightly embarrassed to hear he was being referred to as the “hot rabbi” at the wedding he was officiating. Stanley, 41, worried he might no longer fit into the category after a string of sleepless nights with a newborn child. The moniker, however, is gaining attention as a result of the Netflix show about a weed-smoking rabbi, leading some to declare this season “hot rabbi autumn”.

Calls for the UK to open the door to reparatory justice for slavery, colonialism and the worsening effect of the climate crisis are growing from Caribbean and African nations, campaigners and MPs as the Commonwealth heads of government meeting (Chogm) gets under way in Samoa. The UN judge Patrick Robinson concluded last year that the UK owed more than £18tn in reparations for its historical involvement in slavery in 14 countries.

A record amount of security funding has been issued to mosques in the UK via a government scheme to protect places of worship from hate crime. According to figures obtained by the Guardian via freedom of information requests, almost £3m was issued to mosques and associated sites under the places of worship security scheme from April 2022 to April 2023, a significant increase from the just over £73,000 issued between 2016 and 2017.

The BBC has announced a latest round of job cuts, involving a net reduction of 130 roles across its news and current affairs department, as part of a wider cost-cutting drive. The chief executive of BBC News, Deborah Turness, announced the changes in an email on Tuesday, saying the corporation sought to cut 185 roles and open 55 new ones with the aim of saving £24m, amounting to 4% of the current budget.
