What I wasn’t counting on was catching COVID somewhere along the way. I tested positive a day after I arrived home and had already been isolating myself out of caution.

Seventeen years ago this month, we published our first issue. It was a simple start that marked the pattern for our first year: two short stories and a cover. Our October 2006 issue featured the works of Lavie Tidhar and Sarah Monette and included art by Tomasz Pietrzyk. All three eventually returned to our pages and Lavie has yet another story in this one. That crew–and all the contributors to our first-year lineup–have a special place in my heart. They gave us a chance when others didn’t.

Skip to content Editorial Clarkesworld launched in 2006, so we’ve had a front row seat for how digital publishing has reshaped the genre short fiction market. While a lot of credit is given to online fiction opening up a much wider and global readership, its survival has been almost exclusively due to digital subscriptions and ebook sales.
