It is a case of five out of three in today's final round of the regular Premiership season. Leicester, Sale, Bristol, Gloucester and Saracens will all be looking over their shoulders this afternoon knowing that one slip up could see their hopes of joining table-toppers Bath in the play-offs kicked into touch. The five could all still finish anywhere from second to sixth with just five points separating them after 17 matches.

Owen Farrell still has the capacity to move the dial in English rugby judging by the hyperventilation caused by the story he wants out of Racing 92. Farrell’s season in Paris may have been a disaster but it has done little to diminish the interest around him. The prospect of a return to the Premiership and – drumroll – possibly England has created a mini-tornado of speculation. First things first, it would be great news for the league if Farrell returned. There are few competitors around of his ilk.

The shortlist for Gallagher Premiership director of rugby of the year was announced this week but it is incomplete. The coach who has lost his last ten league games and is currently serving a six-match ban for abusing match officials should be on there. The fact that Steve Diamond is not listed is in no way surprising. Coaches of clubs cast adrift at the foot of the league table who direct industrial language at referees when his side loses in contentious fashion do not tend to feature.

Rekeiti Ma’asi-White has played his way to an England call-up on the back of a try-scoring run which has surprised even himself. The 22-year-old centre scored his third try in successive games in Sale’s victory over Bristol on Friday night to underline just why he is about to be named in a senior training squad for the first time next week. It brought his total to five for the Sharks since he completed a loan spell with Caldy in January.
