Hello from 8:41am Greenwich Mean Time; lovely London. Here are some impression-sensation smears of getting here from Vermont: -Last minute stress and surge of faith; “yes, I have my passport”-Childish delight as I see an Eastern tailed blue butterfly on the way to the car. There will soon be clouds of them in the yard. -The smell of the almost emerged lilac bush flowers. It gives me a desperate shiver as I worry that I may miss them since their season is so short. I’m only gone a week.

From the tree line comes intermittent, stabby bursts of gobbling. Wild turkeys. The boys are very high on hormones (just ask my truck) and looking for love. The females are busy eating the newly hatched bugs and will take a lot of convincing. The gobbling is quite distracting (and funny) and it reminds me of when I had two young female turkeys here on the farm. One disappeared early on but the other, Pam, stuck around. She fell madly in love with StuntManNate and would haunt him on the regular.

My day started with the sighting of an Indigo Bunting which is so electrifying it can’t not be lucky. So small and ferociously blue… it seems impossible in this less-than-tropical climate, which makes it an even bigger treat. My mind is a miasma that is everywhere at once; the world and its Nazis, setting up a new record, ongoing musical preparations, home, springtime, and with all my loves. I keep trying to reel myself in, but the full moon has made that nearly impossible.

Spring is many people’s favorite time of year for obvious reasons. Out here in the rural parts it is truly breathtaking. The biggest thrill for me is all the bird species returning and the emergence of local animals from hibernation. I missed them! There is one thing I am not happy about however; the drastic uptick in roadkill. One reason for this drastic increase is obvious; there are just more animals, but the other is a little more interesting?
