Four eastern lowland gorillas have been introduced into the wild in Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in the largest ever translocation of the critically endangered species. GRACE The female gorillas had been rescued from the illegal wildlife trade as babies and cared for at the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center (GRACE), in Kasuhgo, eastern DRC. Ndijingala, pictured here, was brought to the sanctuary in 2010 and is now 16 years old.

Mari Luz Canaquiri Murayari, of Peru’s indigenous Kukama people, has been awarded the 2025 Goldman Environmental Prize for her work to protect the Marañón River. The prestigious annual award is given to six grassroots environmental leaders, each working in a different continent. Goldman Environmental Prize The Marañón River runs 900 miles (1,450 kilometers) across Peru, from the glaciers of the Andes into the Amazon River.
