At the regular City of Canyon City Commission meeting June 17, Michael Kitten was introduced by Canyon City Manager Joe Price, as the new executive director of the Canyon Economic Development Corporation (CEDC). He is replacing Stephanie Tucker, who recently resigned to take a new position in Selina, Texas. Kitten brings 30 years of experience to the position. Price introduced Kitten, who was previously with Amarillo Economic Development Corporation and also served as a dean at Amarillo College.

As of June 20, the sign is up, and finishing touches are going on. However, Long John Silver’s new location at 4406 S. Bell in Amarillo has been experiencing a few delays. Fans of the crunchy fish, malt vinegar and crumbles may have to wait a little bit longer for it to hit port, but hope is on the horizon. According to James Bryant, local franchise owner, the two weeks of rain in June slowed down the project from installing some of the plumbing needed for the renovating of the building.

Cross Bar SRMA, a 9,900-acre area near Amarillo, Texas, opened its gates for a day of public outdoor recreation. Once the entrance is moved, the area will offer horseback riding, hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing opportunities. Future developments include campgrounds, restrooms, and an all-weather road. About 15 miles northwest of Amarillo, off the grid, lies a gem of undeveloped rugged countryside with canyons and creeks, native wildlife and flora and fauna of prairie land.

What to do to beat the heat of summerAt almost mid-June, the Amarillo area hasn’t really hit its stride in hot weather. We’ve experienced some good rainfall and moisture, according to Luigi Meccariello, National Weather Service lead meteorologist, which keep temperatures down as well as drought and threats of wildfire, but now the temperature is bound to ramp up with some areas, bringing on heat advisories for the area.

Recently, the Slug Bug Ranch, located on I-40 near Starlight Ranch in Amarillo, was painted purple June 11 to shine a spotlight on elder abuse. Elder abuse is described as an intentional act or failure to act that causes or crates a risk of harm to an older adult. It can include physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect and financial exploitation, according to Center for Elder Abuse and Education.
