    Nelson DeMille, a prolific author of action-packed adventures, has died at 81. “Nelson fought a valiant nine-month battle with esophageal cancer. True to form, he faced this ordeal with courage, grace, and good humor. We are grieving, but also celebrating his wonderful life and his lasting legacy as a father, friend, and storyteller,” his family said in a statement to CBS News. DeMille authored 23 books, according to his website, including two he wrote with his son, author Alex DeMille.

    Nelson DeMille, the prolific bestselling novelist whose success over a decades-long career made him one of the biggest modern-day celebrities to call Long Island home, has died. He was 81. Born on Aug. 23, 1943, in New York City to Huron and Antonia (Panzera) DeMille, the family moved to Long Island, where he graduated from Elmont Memorial High School. DeMille attended Hofstra University before joining the U.S. Army, serving in the Vietnam War, where he saw combat and was honored for his service.

    Loyal King stans may disagree, but this is a snooze. A much-beloved author gives a favorite recurring character her own novel. Holly Gibney made her first appearance in print with a small role in Mr. Mercedes (2014). She played a larger role in The Outsider (2018). And she was the central character in If It Bleeds, a novella in the 2020 collection of the same name. King has said that the character “stole his heart.” Readers adore her, too.
